About the University
UCLan is a public university based in the charming town of Preston, Lancashire in England. With roots dating as far back as 1828 in The Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, the institution later become known as Harris Art College, then Preston Polytechnic, then Lancashire Polytechnic. In 1992, it was granted university status by the Privy Council. Over the decades, UCLan has evolved into a large and dynamic university that continues re-innovate itself. UCLan’s main campus remains in Preston but its global reach has increased significantly with a €53m expansion into Cyprus.

Assessment
UCLan assessment comprises a variety of methods, including but not limited to written exams and assignments, verbal assessments, presentations, clinical skills assessments, portfolio and e-portfolio reviews, ward simulations and a four-week student assistantship.

Course Details
The School of Medicine has developed an innovative programme to provide a UK MBBS medical qualification for international (Non-EU) students who would normally have limited access to UK educational courses. UCLan’s MBBS will train doctors through a programme undergoing high quality assurance by the UK General Medical Council and which offers a medical education to the highest UK standards for self-funded and sponsored international students.
The course builds on UCLan’s existing expertise in dentistry, pharmacy, and allied health professions and students will be part of a School which will allow for unique interactions with these groups of students. UCLan’s MBBS programme will deliver outstanding teaching, combined with real-world clinical experience, to shape the global doctors of the future. The MBBS programme has been developed in line with General Medical Council (GMC) quality assurance processes and as with any new medical school receives regular quality assurance visits from the GMC.
The MBBS degree will provide graduates with a UK primary medical qualification who are to take on the roles and responsibilities of a medical doctor entering into foundation postgraduate training or international equivalent, as required by the GMC.
The degree places an emphasis on basic medical sciences, communication and clinical skills to help you develop skills in evaluating clinical and scientific evidence. Throughout the programme, you will benefit from a range of learning strategies, such as small group tutorials, seminars, laboratory-based teaching sessions, workshops and clinical placements in primary and secondary care.
- Year 1 & 2: During Years 1 and 2, you will be taught by expert practitioners in our state-of-the-art clinical skills laboratories based at the Preston Campus. In both years you will have community placements and will have a secondary care placement at the end of Year 2.
- Year 3 & 4: In Years 3 and 4, you will complete supervised clinical placements in one of UCLan’s clinical education partners, including; East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and GP practices in East Lancashire, Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and others. - Year 4: After Year 4, high performing students may be offered the opportunity to take an additional year and gain a master’s degree. Additionally, many students will also produce publications and have the opportunity to present their research work at national or international conferences.
- year 5: Year 5 is dedicated to providing you with the opportunity to develop your early professional practice, through a rotation of four, six-week apprenticeships. These are designed to encourage independent working with close supervision from departmental mentors and an assigned clinical supervisor.
